Limu Nutrients

So what exactly are the Limu Nutrients

Limu Moui contains over 77 ‘known’ nutrients such as:

  • Fucoidan
  • Glyconutrients (galactose, mannose, xylose)
  • Seventeen amino acids (including glycoproteins)
  • A wide range of essential and nonessential fatty acids
  • A broad spectrum of essential minerals and vitamins
  • A variety of polyphenols (powerful antioxidant plant compounds that protect the body from dangerous free radicals)

Glyconutrients are vital for optimal immune function. Studies have found that people with unbalanced levels of the eight essential glyconutrients are more likely to have diseases such as anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory infections and even cancer.

Limu TestimonialsPolyphenols found in limu moui act as superb cell protectors that help prevent:

  • Malignant growths
  • Degenerative diseases
  • Toxic accumulation in tissues
  • Tissue damage
  • Skin deterioration

Fucans & Fucoidan: Complex polysaccharides with cancer-protective and immune-stimulant properties, which also raise HGF (hepatic growth factor) for better overall health.

Organic Iodine: supports normal metabolism and optimal thyroid function

Alginate: natural detoxifier

Laminarin: anti-clotting and anticancer compound (Research studies have confirmed the ability of Fucoidan to discourage blood clot formation. Nov 2000 issue of European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery state “Fucoidan is a more potent antiproliferative polysulphated polysaccharide than Heparin.”

Colloidal Minerals:

  • Retain their integrity even when in a liquid suspension
  • Micro-minerals: their tiny size makes them easier for our bodies to absorb through the cell wall
  • Plant source of colloidal minerals are easier to absorb. They are not in a metallic form, which can poison the body.
  • Help transport and utilize other nutrients such as vitamins
  • Facilitate the removal of toxic substances in the body.

The combination of these nutrients has been shown to increase blood flow, decrease inflammation, and build the immune system.

This would all lead to show that it has a direct effect on regulating the bodies cortisol levels.

This has made the nutrients in Limu and specifically Fucoidan to have proven health results in a wide variety of diseases and sickness.

Obamacare Alternative that works

There is no doubt that health insurance needs an overhaul. A few years ago as a health insurance salesman primarily to small business owners I got to see firsthand how insane the prices were that people were paying.  After seeing the plans for Obamacare I can’t help but feel even more empathy for those same people. Small business owners and those that don’t have corporate sponsored health insurance are the backbone of America.  I have been joking with some past fellow employees about these new Obamacare plans.  I know that if I would have walked into an appointment with these plans I would have been laughed at.  Now these same plans are for the most part peoples only option.

From what I can see the biggest issue is how our modern conventional medicine actually works.  The problem is our doctors are pushing pharmaceutical drugs on us that keep us in a circle of perpetual unhealthiness.

This video below is from a functional medicine doctor that shows what being deficient in 1 mineral, magnesium, can cause.  The cause of magnesium deficiency is typically linked to diet, stress and diuretics.  The symptoms of magnesium deficiency are depression, high blood pressure, bone loss, high cholesterol etc.  The pharmaceuticals we take are only addressing our symptoms such as high blood pressure.  Blood pressure medication causes a magnesium deficiency which creates a vicious cycle that unless we address the cause will never clear up.

This fundamental issue in how we deal with symptoms healthcare should be the fore front of the fight to improve health care.  The amount of money spent on diet related issues

It’s a hard number to come by, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, three-quarters of healthcare spending goes to treat “preventable chronic diseases.” Treatment for obesity alone runs a tab of $147 billion, and that doesn’t figure in diabetes ($116 billion) or cardiovascular disease.

If the government would turn their efforts against these epidemics, perhaps it would lighten the strain that is causing so many issues with healthcare in the first place.

Diet and nutrition are vital to our health.  If we fill our lives with refined carbs, and sugars that are void of nutrients we will continue to have nutrient deficiencies and continue to see ourselves and our family and friends reaping the consequences of these diseases.

There is not one diet that is the answer, gluten-free, Paleo, Atkins, Low-fat, low carb all work in different ways due to the complexity of our bodies, but the bottom line is we need to be focused on nutrients not on the macro level.  Whether you get magnesium from cacao beans or from meat is not as important as getting magnesium in your diet.  Magnesium is responsible for over 300 different functions in your body.  This is just 1 nutrient, the same goes for vitamin b’s, vitamin C, Selenium, Iodine etc. In our fast paced society today it is vital that we have nutrient supplements in our life.

One that I love for my family is Limu.  Limu comes from brown seaweed.  And is a simply drink that gives our bodies much needed nutrition with over 70 different nutrients.  We feel better, sleep better and have more energy.  Isn’t that what we are all looking for anyways.  I also know that Limu has shifted my focus to put better food into my body.  I love the way good food makes me feel.  More info

Of course this only address diet related diseases, which would actually surprise you to how many are related to nutrition, but we still break bones and have other things happen in our lives.  So the best alternative I have found for my family is Medi-Share.

Medi-Share gives you the assurance that you’re not alone when it comes to paying medical bills. With healthcare so expensive these days, it’s really important to have the peace of mind that your healthcare is affordable.

Medi-Share is a healthcare sharing program where Christians share financial resources to pay each other’s medical expenses. Since 1993, over $805 million has been shared and discounted among Medi-Share members.

It truly works, and I think you should look into it.

The best Obamacare alternative that works is we first focus on Nutrition, then on plans that let us be involved in other people’s lives.

Limu and Inflammation

Limu and Inflammation

Thomas Edison is quoted as saying:

“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”

We now live in the future and we treat disease with drugs now more than ever.

So is there another way of looking at the issue of disease and health.

Functional medicine is one such view

The standard medical treatment = drug prescription.

The functional medicine approach = determine the underlying cause and eliminate the imbalance through nutrition, detox, hormonal imbalance, energy mitochondria, digestive system, immune dysfunction,

Dr. Mark Hyman a major proponent of functional medicine and proper nutrition says in a video from TEDMED 2010

That when he was sick with a number of symptoms he went to major doctors all across the country.  After all his meetings with doctors he states:

“I didn’t get a whole lot of answers, but I got a lot of prescriptions.  I got Prozac for depression, I got Valium, I got Ritalin to focus, I got Provigil cause that didn’t work, I got Ambien to sleep at night, Advil and I even got Viagra.  Now I realize that I didn’t have a drug deficiency. I mean is depression really a Prozac deficiency. Is low sex drive a Viagra deficiency, is ADD a Ritalin deficiency, or is cholesterol a Lipitor deficiency.  These are not drug deficiencies, these are imbalances in the basic biological symptoms in the network of our biology, disturbances in the patterns that give rise to what we call disease.”

Prescriptions are needed in todays society.  They help stabilize our bodies and many times keep us alive.  But most of the time prescriptions are given to treat the symptoms that we have instead of treating the cause of disease on a cellular level.

The system is set up to address the what and not always the why.

Here is an illustration showing the two viewstwopaths

When I was in my early twenties.  I was diagnosed with 2 ruptured discs in my back.  I was actually in Mexico at the time doing missionary work and went to see a few doctors in a rural hospital in Mexico. When they took an x-ray of my back my spine was in the shape of an S in order to keep my spine from compressing on the disc on the side that would shoot fluid into my nerves and cause severe pain running down my leg.  I could not get my body straight at all and walked hunched over. I had to sleep in a small love-seat because I could not stretch out. I flew back early and went to see a specialist in the United States.  He informed me I needed to have surgery ASAP.  I got a second opinion and the second Dr. advised against surgery at that time.  I quickly found myself on a plethora of prescription drugs including: Vicodin, Flexeril, Hydrocodone, Ibuprofen. I was still in severe pain and all the drugs really did was knock me out for 4 hours until it was time to take another dose.  In addition to the drugs not really addressing the issue; the drugs caused severe hemorrhoid issues and I could barely crawl the 15 feet to the bathroom in order to have some more unpleasant issues.  I knew I had a ruptured disc, I knew I had degenerative disc disease, I knew my options were pain or surgery according to the doctor.  However as I begin to study on what caused flare ups.  I quickly found that diet does play a part.  I stopped drinking coffee and soda which dehydrated me. I begin to drink lots of water and started taking fish oil pills which are a natural anti-inflammatory.  It took some time, but the better I ate, and the more I took care of my body the better I became.  I soon found myself back to normal and able to function as if I had no back issues whatsoever.  I have had flare ups periodically after this from lifting heavy items or twisting in a unnatural fashion.  Now however I quickly get into my routine of an anti-inflammatory diet and plenty of water.  I now find myself able to control the situation through diet and nutrition.

I know the What every-time:  I have  a ruptured disc, but the why is inflammation.  If I focus on the what, I fail to address the Why.  And from my own experience I know that pharmaceuticals address the what and cause a myriad of side effects, but when I finally changed my thinking to the why I was able to feel better without surgery.

So what is inflammation anyways?

Inflammation is the bodies response to a situation.  It is what the body does to heal itself.  However uncontrolled inflammation becomes a self-perpetuating issue and can cause its own issues within the body.

In a medical version of the “unified field” theory in physics, many scientists now believe that most—or perhaps all—chronic diseases may have the same trigger: inflammation. This fiery process has been linked to everything from heart attacks and strokes to type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and even cancer.

Chronic, low-grade systemic inflammation—fueled by such disorders as excessive belly fat, poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and gum disease—may explain why lifestyle-linked diseases have reached epidemic levels in Western countries, while remaining rare in the developing world.

“There are clear indications that inflammation explains why plaque builds up in the arteries in patients with atherosclerosis,” says Philip Schauer, MD, director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. “Chronic inflammation also plays a direct role in diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, asthma and many other conditions.” Link to report

What do we do to control chronic inflammation?

We need to have a proper intake of vitamins and minerals.  This can be accomplished through an anti-inflammatory diet.  Which is rich in Vitamins and Minerals.  The main issue however is that we try and eat healthier, but we still find ourselves nutrient deficient. Even if we try to completely change our diet we will find nutritional decline in many foods makes the diet still not enough.   Therefore we need to take supplements.  There are so many supplements out there how do we know which ones to take.

If we try and take individual supplements not only do we have to take an infinite number of pills it seems, but some vitamins won’t work without their co-enzymes; also many powder based pills are not easily digested by our bodies.  So that is why we need supplements that have a majority of our base vitamins and minerals as well as being in a bio-available form so our bodies can actually absorb them.

So what makes Limu Different?

Limu is seaweed in a bottle.  It is processed through a chemical free extraction process that maintains the integrity of the plant and makes it extremely bio-available.  This means our bodies can actually absorb it.

Limu contains over 70 vitamins and minerals many of which are needed for reducing  chronic inflammation.  Such as

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin B
  • Selenium
  • Amino Acids Isoluciene and Luciene
  • Magnesium

But it also contains Fucoidan- sulfated polysaccharide that comes from brown seaweed.  Fucoidan is only found in marine based plants you cannot get it from any land-based nutrition.  Fucoidan has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties.  There are numerous studies on regarding this.

Limu is not just a supplement of crushed extracted powders that your body doesn’t recognize.  It is a bio-available liquid that provides your body with incomparable  nutrition.

Nutritional Decline and Need for Limu

Nutritional Decline

Our nation and our food is in a nutritional decline.  As statistics continue to increase in diet related deaths and diseases it is time we make a change in our lives for the better.

Leading Causes of Deathlink

(Diet and inactivity are leading risk factors for causes of death shown in bold.)

1. Heart Disease
2. Cancer
3. Stroke
4. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease 123,550
5. Accidents 93,592
6. Diabetes
7. Pneumonia and Influenza 67,024
8. Alzheimer’s Disease 49,044
9. Nephritis 37,672
10. Septicemia 31,613
11. Suicide 28,332
12. Chronic Liver Disease/Cirrhosis 26,219
13. High Blood Pressure
14. Pneumonitis 16,659
15. Homicide 16,137

Unhealthy eating and inactivity contribute to 310,000 to 580,000 deaths each year according to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

I think we all know how important diet is, but what difference does it really make?

“Men with the lowest amount of vitamin C have a 62% increased risk of cancer and a 57% increased risk of dying from any cause.“ Vitamin C status and mortality in US adults. Loria CM, et al. Am J Clin Nutr 72:139-45, 2000.

“Lutein and zeaxanthin reduce the incidence of cataract by 22%.” A prospective study of carotenoid and vitamin A intakes and risk of cataract extraction in US women. Chasan-Taber L, et al. Am J Clin Nutr 70:509-16, 1999.

“People with low levels of retinol, beta-carotene, vitamin E and selenium are more likely to get cancer.” Serum retinol, beta-carotene, vitamin E and selenium as related to subsequent cancer of specific sites. Comstock GW, et al. Am J Epidemiol 135:115-21, 1992.

“Supplemental vitamin D reduces the risk of colon cancer by half compared to dietary vitamin D which reduces it 12%.” Calcium, vitamin D, and dairy foods and the occurrence of colon cancer in men. Kearney J, et al. Am J Epidemiol 143:907-17, 1996.

“The area of China with the lowest micronutrient intake has the highest rate of cancer. Supplementation with vitamin E, selenium and beta-carotene lowers the rate.” Vitamin/mineral supplementation and cancer risk: internationaal chemoprevention trials. Blot WJ. Proc Soc Exp Biol Med 216:291-6, 1997

We can see the effects of improper nutrition.  Our bodies are very complex systems and proper diet gives our bodies the nutrients that we need in order for it to perform at a proper level.  This maintains wellness and fights disease.

Unfortunately as we look at the modern American Diet we see a lack of nutrients.  In fact, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2009, 67.5 percent of adults ate fruit less than two times daily and 73.7 percent ate vegetables less than three times per day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
only 11% of Americans meet the USDA’s guidelines for eating 5-9 servings of fresh fruit and vegetables daily. CDC data indicates:
  • 93% of Americans don’t enough vitamin E
  • 56% don’t get enough magnesium
  • 31% don’t get enough vitamin C
  • 12% don’t get enough zinc
  • Many seniors lack B vitamins
  • Many people are low on vitamin K, fiber, Vitamin A, calcium, and potassium

Another major striking element is that even if we increased our intake of conventional fruits, vegetables and grains we would still be lacking nutrients due to a decline in nutritional value in most foods.

A landmark study on the topic by Donald Davis and his team of researchers from the University of Texas (UT) at Austin’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was published in December 2004 in theJournal of the American College of Nutrition. They studied U.S. Department of Agriculture nutritional data from both 1950 and 1999 for 43 different vegetables and fruits, finding “reliable declines” in the amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and vitamin C over the past half century. Davis and his colleagues chalk up this declining nutritional content to the preponderance of agricultural practices designed to improve traits (size, growth rate, pest resistance) other than nutrition.

According to the report, Still No Free Lunch, food scientists have compared the nutritional levels of modern crops with historic, and generally lower-yielding, ones. Today’s food produces 10 to 25 percent less iron, zinc, protein, calcium, vitamin C, and other nutrients, the studies show. Researchers from Washington State University who analyzed 63 spring wheat cultivars grown between 1842 and 2003 found an 11 percent decline in iron content, a 16 percent decline in copper, a 25 percent decline in zinc, and a 50 percent decline in selenium.

Which means we would have to consume twice as much bread to get the same amount of selenium as we did 100 years ago.

Nearly half the calcium and vitamin A in broccoli, for example, have disappeared. Collards are not the greens they used to be. If you’re eating them for minerals and vitamin A, be aware that the vitamin A content has fallen from 6500 IUs to 3800 IUs. Their potassium has dropped from from 400 mg to 170 mg. Magnesium has fallen sharply-57 mg to 9. Cauliflower has lost almost half its vitamin C, along with its thiamin and riboflavin. Most of the calcium in pineapple is gone-from 17 mg (per 100 grams raw) to 7. And the list goes on and on. Link

The nutrients in food enable the cells in our bodies to perform their necessary functions. This quote from a popular textbook describes how the nutrients in food are essential for our physical functioning.

“Nutrients are the nourishing substances in food that are essential for the growth, development and maintenance of body functions. Essential meaning that if a nutrient is not present, aspects of function and therefore human health decline.

When nutrient intake does not regularly meet the nutrient needs dictated by the cell activity, the metabolic processes slow down or even stop.”

– Perspectives in Nutrition, Wardlow and Insel

Our bodies need the complexity of vitamins and minerals to function.  It is not necessarily about supplementing one vitamin without others for instance Calcium cannot work without Vitamin D.   Magnesium is necessary for some 300 reactions in the body, it is used by every organ in the body, especially your heart, muscles, and kidneys. It contributes to teeth and bones as well as activating enzymes, contributing to energy production, and helps regulate calcium, copper, zinc, potassium, vitamin D, and other important nutrients.

So what do we do?

For starters we need a kick-start.  We need to shift our focus to a new lifestyle.  While a shift to a diet rich in vegetables and fruits will bring about a nutritional tsunami. The sad truth is most Americans take food like drugs.  Americans pump their bodies full of refined sugars and carbohydrates that mimic nutrition and gives us temporary highs.

Dr. David Reuben, author of Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Nutrition says, “…white refined sugar-is not a food. It is a pure chemical extracted from plant sources, purer in fact than cocaine, which it resembles in many ways. Its true name is sucrose. The chemical formula for cocaine is C17H21NO4. Sugar’s formula again is C12H22O11. For all practical purposes, the difference is that sugar is missing the “N”, or nitrogen atom.

If we have a deficiency of just 1 mineral in our bodies such as magnesium we may possibly find ourselves with fatigue and brain fog.  Our body through improper conditioning tells us we are hungry.  We quickly grab a sugar filled soda, energy drink, candy bar, or some other high processed sugar filled snack.  The sugar lifts our mood and gives us a temporary hit, not unlike a drug.  During the refining process, 64 food elements are destroyed. All the potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, phosphate, and sulfate are removed. The A, D, and B, vitamins are destroyed and what we are left with is a dangerous downward spiral that will continue until we start getting proper nutrition.

A majority of people fail in switching to a healthy diet, because they will begin to go through withdrawals getting off their sugar drug.  We need  a process and stepping stones that give us natural energy, health and longevity.

No where is this more evident in the world today then in Okinawa Japan.  Okinawa is considered a Blue Zone.  Which means it has one of the highest concentrations of people that live over 100 years old. Not only that, but they also live an extra 10 years longer without disability.  When Dr. Suzuki, the Principal Investigator of the OCS, first began his studies, he found an unusual number of centenarians to be in extraordinarily healthy shape. They were lean, youthful-looking, energetic, and had remarkably low rates of heart disease and cancer-even stomach cancer, which claimed many mainland Japanese. And they enjoyed the longest life expectancy in the world. By 1995, according to Japan Ministry of Health and Welfare life tables, Okinawan life expectancy had even surpassed the absolute limits of population life expectancy estimated by the Japan Population Research Institute and many biodemographers (see Fries JF. New England Journal of Medicine 1980;303:131-5

But that is all beginning to change in the younger generations.  Why?  While the traditional diet in Okinawa was primarily vegetables and seaweed which is rich in nutrients the younger generation is moving towards an American diet.  Most Americans have heard of Okinawa because after world war II Okinawa was under United states administration for 27 years.   Okinawa continue to have a United states presence after it was given back to Japan, but not without incidence.  The first Mcdonalds opened in 1976 in all of Japan in Okinawa. Today it has the top number of fast food establishments in the country, 8.19 for every 100,000 residents.

In a Japanese public health and nutrition survey into obesity levels, released for the first time this year, Okinawa topped the national rankings, with 45.2 percent of all adult males aged 20 to 69 classed as obese with a BMI of 25 or over.

Experts say that the generation that grew up eating American food is now reaching middle age overweight and at risk from diabetes. They also have a steady increase in heart related diseases and certain types of cancer.  Almost 30 per cent of Okinawan men die before reaching 65, and nearly half of men in their forties are obese.

As the increase in high saturated fats and sugars continues to be consumed the traditional diet of seaweed has decreased by 2/3rds.

Many scientists and experts are looking at Okinawa as a microcosm of whats to come if the world continues down this dietary death march.

So if we can get a supplement rich in dietary nutrition it may begin to restore our bodies to actual energy.  Limu which is made from sphaerotrichia divaricata or Kusa-Mozuku as it is called in Japan may be just the kick-start our bodies need to wean ourselves off of our dietary drugs such as saturated fats and refined sugars. With over 70 Essential vitamins and Minerals including the Super Nutrient Fucoidan it is something our body desperately needs.  Limu is processed in a patented chemical free extraction process and is made in a bio-available form which means our body can actually absorb the nutrients.  Marine based plants which are not subject to depleted soil, harsh pesticides and fertilizer are still in their natural states.  Lets take a lesson from what the typical American diet has done to one of our worlds most important blue zone.  Replacing a meal of junk food with Limu-lean may be a start of a new lifestyle where we feel better, look better and even think better.  There is no doubt that the complexity of our bodies needs the vitamins and minerals found in Limu products.  These vitamins and Minerals in their complexity and natural forms cannot be found in any land based plant.  And the isolation of any vitamin or mineral is not the way our body was designed to operate.  Just 4 oz a day and you could be on your way to More energy, better sleep, increased immune system and so on.  So what are you waiting for?

Limu Miracle Cure or Scam

Is Limu Miracle cure? Or is Limu Scam?

The first time I heard about Limu, my immediate reaction was, ‘Oh great, another magical potion that claims to cure everything.’ In short, I wasn’t fully buying it.  However, my curiosity was piqued as I read a steady stream of amazing testimonials of Limu helping with a vast assortment of what seemed to be unrelated diseases and ailments. So I set out in search of facts to either substantiate or weaken the near miraculous claims I had heard about Limu. Many scientific articles later, what I discovered was that the questions circling this dilemma seem almost endless.  So, let’s take an objective look at the claims about this ‘snake oil’ and what could possibly be happening at the cellular level.

What is Limu?

Limu is a Nutritional Supplement that is manufactured through a patented chemical free extraction of the seaweed LIMU Moui from the region around Tonga.  It contains over 70 vital nutrients that would appear to have effects on many different diseases in humans and pets.

Is Limu just the next snake oil?

The problem that most people have is they are naturally skeptical, and rightly so.  Whenever a product comes along claiming to cure many different ailments, immediately a red flag goes off in our head and we start to assume it is just another snake oil.  One of the past characteristics of snake oil was that no one knew what was in it therefore people could claim whatever they wanted about it since there was nothing to compare it to.  We know what is in Limu and we can see the science behind it.

What is the science behind Limu? And how can it possibly affect so many different health concerns?

The science behind Limu is extensive.  There are numerous studies on each of the 70 nutrients that are naturally found in Limu.  Without a doubt, the main nutrient that is raising excitement is Fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide that is not found in any land-based plants.  A quick search on will lend over 1100 different studies on fucoidan’s anti-cancer, anti-viral, immune-building properties as well as its powerfully positive effects on blood pressure, diabetes, memory loss, etc.

A common link in illnesses and diseases.

At first glance the connection between: cancer, diabetes, thyroid issues, depression, allergies, inflammation, memory loss, blood pressure, cholesterol would seem shoddy at best.

A possible link could be cortisol. In fact, cortisol is the foundation of the entire endocrine system.

limu cortisol

Cortisol, isn’t that the stress hormone? You may be asking.

Cortisol is the stress hormone therefore that is where most people stop, but cortisol is one of the most important parts of our entire human system.  It is a fine balance between healthy and unhealthy. It can be the difference maker between having a disease and your body healing it.

From a Mayo Clinic Study on stress we find that

“The long-term activation of the stress-response system — and the subsequent overexposure to cortisol and other stress hormones — can disrupt almost all your body’s processes. This puts you at increased risk of numerous health problems, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Digestive problems
  • Heart disease
  • Sleep problems
  • Weight gain
  • Memory and concentration impairment”

Stanford did a study in 2000 showing that

Stress hormone (cortisol) may contribute to breast cancer deaths

Through other research it is easy to find links between unregulated cortisol levels and

  • Suppressed immunity
  • Hypertension
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • Insulin resistance
  • Carbohydrate cravings
  • Metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes
  • Fat deposits on the face, neck, and belly
  • Reduced libido
  • Bone loss
  • Fatigue
  • Teeth Grinding
  • Restless Legs
  • Hot Flashes
  • Insomnia
  • Siezures

So from what is seems cortisol is always bad for us since all these problems stem from increased cortisol levels.  But further observance would show that cortisol is used to bring relief or healing to all of the same issues.

For instance we can easily see that cortisol is used to

  • help the body to manage stress
  • convert protein into glucose to boost flagging blood sugar levels
  • work in tandem with the hormone insulin to maintain constant blood sugar levels
  • reduce inflammation
  • contribute to the maintenance of constant blood pressure
  • contribute to the workings of the immune system

Also we see many drugs on the market that mimic cortisol and are used to treat

  • skin disorders – such as psoriasis
  • inflammatory diseases – such as asthma, ulcerative colitis, lupus and some forms of arthritis
  • cancer – particularly cancers related to the immune system, such as leukaemia and lymphoma
  • organ transplant – corticosteroids are used to inhibit the body’s immune response so that a transplanted organ is not rejected
  • Addison’s disease – an autoimmune disorder that stops the adrenal glands from making sufficient hormones, including cortisol.
  • Allergies

The problem with many of these prescription drugs that mimic cortisol is that they also have many horrible side effects.  They also usually address one issue while creating another issue within the body.

Therefore,  if cortisol levels could be naturally regulated through nutrition, our body would heal itself without the use of harmful pharmaceuticals.

How can Cortisol be both the cause of these diseases and the cure?

The answer lies in what cortisol does exactly.  Cortisol is produced in the adrenal gland.  It is part of our ‘fight or flight’ response, which means  it is the messenger that tells the body to kick into gear and attack a potential threat, whether physical (inflammation, a virus, etc.) or emotional (fear, stress, etc).   For instance, when a part of the body becomes inflamed, cortisol is responsible for sending out anti-inflammatory agents to bring down the inflammation.  The same goes for allergies, viruses, sleep, blood levels, cholesterol, etc.

However, when there is a constant release of cortisol, such as when a person is under constant stress, cortisol is spread too thin within the body.  Thus, when a problem arises, such as when a virus attacks the body, there is insufficient cortisol remaining in the body to combat the virus.  The virus is left unchecked, and the body gets sick. Sickness then causes more stress on the body, more cortisol is spread to the wrong areas, and in turn, what is called a ‘negative cortisol feedback loop’ is perpetuated.

Bottom line: maintaining proper cortisol levels in the body is vital to good health; however, unregulated cortisol levels can be extremely problematic to the health of the body.

Does Limu regulate Cortisol levels?

We do know that Vitamin C has been shown to have an effect on inhibiting cortisol – In the animal studies, vitamin C fed to rats undergoing stress not only prevented the expected increase in cortisol levels, it prevented the animals from exhibiting the known signs of physical and emotional stress, including loss of body weight. “Pay particular attention to obtaining sufficient quantities of vitamins B1, B5 and B6 for improving cortisol levels. Vitamins B1 and B6 promote healthy cortisol levels by supporting adrenal gland function, says naturopath Peter D’Adamo, author of the book “Live Right For Your Type.” Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, is easily depleted by stress, and supplementing with extra amounts during stressful times will help prevent cortisol fluctuations. Zinc may reduce your stress response and decrease cortisol levels. D’Adamo recommends 15 to 25 mg of zinc per day.”  Link to Website
